Madda Walabu University has hosted a remarkable Field Day program in Agarfa District, Sheneka Kebele under the theme “Advancing Irrigated Wheat and Potato Production for a More Resilient Future.” The event brought together university leaders, district officials, farmers, researchers, agricultural experts, students, and other stakeholders to observe the ongoing progress and achievements of dry-season irrigated wheat production in the area.
The project, which is being implemented by Madda Walabu University with the support of Grow Further, focuses on promoting sustainable wheat production, improving crop yield, strengthening climate resilience, ensuring efficient irrigation water utilization, and enhancing farmer-centered technology adoption.
During the field visit, practical demonstrations and detailed technical explanations were presented by the Principal Investigator, Jemal Abdulkerim (Assistant Professor), together with members of the project team. Participants were given the opportunity to closely observe different wheat varieties and irrigation practices being implemented through the project.
Speaking at the event, the President of Madda Walabu University, Dr. Berhanemeskel Tena, emphasized the significance of the initiative in strengthening food security and agricultural transformation. He emphasized, “The reality we have seen on the ground proves that we can produce wheat and potato during the dry season not only for food security, but even beyond that”.
Likewise, the Vice President for Academic, Research, Technology Transfer and Community Service, Dr. Bezabih Wendimu, highly appreciated the progress of the project and acknowledged the valuable contributions of the funding organization, farmers, researchers, and all stakeholders involved in the initiative.
In his remarks, the Head of the Agarfa District Agriculture Office, Mr. Tegene Tolosa, underlined the importance of institutional collaboration in achieving national agricultural development goals. “It is our pleasure to work on irrigated wheat production together with organizations like Madda Walabu University to realize the country’s development goals,” he said.
Farmers who attended the Field Day expressed strong satisfaction and interest in the project outcomes. They also directly evaluated and selected promising wheat varieties based on their field observations, production performance, and personal preferences.
The Field Day concluded with a shared commitment among stakeholders to further strengthen collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing irrigated wheat production, improving farmers’ livelihoods, and contributing to sustainable food security and climate resilience in Ethiopia.

የመደ ወላቡ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ማኔጅመንት ፣ ግብርናና ተፈጥሮ ሀብት ኮሌጅ ፣ ተመራማሪዎች፣ የእፅዋት ሳይንስ ት/ት ክፍል ተማሪዎችና ሌሎች ባለድርሻ አካላት በአጋርፋ ወረዳ ሸነካ ቀበሌ የከርሰ ምድር ውሀን በመጠቀም የለማ የበጋ ስንዴን ጎበኙ፡፡
በአጋርፋ ወረዳ ሸነካ ቀበሌ የከርሰ ምድር ውሀን በመጠቀም የበጋ ስንዴ በመደ ወላቡ ዩኒቨርሲቲ፣ Grow Further (USA) እና በአጋርፋ ወረዳ ግብርና ጽ/ቤት የጋራ ትብብር በመልማት ላይ ነው፡፡
መዳወላቡ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በባለሙያዎቹ በቅርበት ከሙያዊ ድጋፍ በተጨማሪ ምርጥ ዘር በመስጠት እየደገፈው ያለውን የበጋ የስንዴ እና የድንች ምርት ሠፋፊ እርሻን በማሳው በአካል በመገኘት ጎብኝተዋል። ይህም የባለፈው ሳምንት የአርሶ አደሮች የምርምር ኮንፈረንስ አካል ነው።
በእለቱ የጉብኝቱን ቡድን የመሩት የመደ ወላቡ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ፕሬዝዳንት ዶ/ር ብርሀነመስቀል ጠና ሲሆኑ በጉብኝቱ ወቅት የዩኒቨርሲቲው ተመራማሪዎች ደከመኝ ሰለቸኝ ሳይሉ የአካባቢውን አርሶ አደሮች ማሳ የራሳቸው ላባራቶሪ በማድረግ ከ12-15 ሜትር የከርሰ ምድር ውሀ በማውጣት እና ውሀን ቆጣቢ በሆነ መልኩ ገበሬዎች የበጋ ስንዴን እንዲያመርቱ በማስቻላቸው አመስግነዋል፡፡ በቀጣይም ዩኒቨርሲቲው ለአርሶአደሮቹ ውጤታማነት የሚያደርገውን ሁሉአቀፍ ድጋፍ አጠናክሮ እንደሚቀጥል ቃል ገብተዋል።
አርሶ አደሮችም የበጋ ስንዴ ማምረትን፣የከርሰ ምድር ውሀን እንዴት መጠቀም እንደሚቻል፣ ሰብልን በማፈራረቅ መዝራት እንዲሁም ያገኙትን ጥቅም ማጋራት እንደሚያስችላቸው አንስተዋል፡፡ ከዚህም ባሻገር Grow Further (USA) እና አጋርፋ ወረዳ ግብርና ጽ/ቤት በአጋርነት ከዩኒቨርሲቲው ጋር መስራታቸውን ያመሰገኑና በቀጣይም በጋራ በመስራት የአርሶ አደሮችን አምራችነት እንድናሳድግ አደራ ብለዋል፡፡
የመደ ወላቡ ዩኒቨርሲቲ መምህርና ተመራማሪ የሆኑት ጀማል አብዱልከሪም የምርምር ስራውን ከሁለት ዓመት በፊት መጀመራቸውን አንስተው በአሁኑ ሰዓት 24 የሚደርሱ የተለያዩ የስንዴ ዝርያዎችን (ቁልምሳ፣ ቦሩ፣ ጉቱ፣ ባሮ፣ በከልቻ፣ መንደዩ፣መልካ፣ሸረሞ፣አባይ፣ደርባና የመሳሰሉትን) በሚገባ በማላመድ አርሶ አደሮች የመረጡትን፣ ምርታማ የሆነውን፣ለአካባቢው አየር ተስማሚ የሆኑትን በመምረጥ መጠቀም እንዲችሉ ማድረግ ያስቻለ ስራ መሆኑን አብራርተዋል፡፡
በተጨማሪም የአጋርፋ ወረዳ የግብርና ጽ/ቤት ሀላፊና የወረዳው ምክትል አስተዳሪ አቶ ተገኔ ቶሎሳ፣ የመደ ወላቡ ዩኒቨርሲቲ የአካዳሚክ፣ ምርምር ቴክኖሎጂ ሽግግር እና የማህበረሰብ አገልግሎት ም/ፕ ዶ/ር በዛብህ ወንድሙና የእለቱ የጉብኝቱ ተሳፊዎች ሰፊ አስተያየቶችን በመስጠት እንዲሁም በተግባር በመሬት ላይ ያለውን የበጋ የስንዴ ምርት በማየት የእለቱ መርሀ ግብር ተጠናቋል፡፡
